tumbling rocks

ka-plunk. ka-plunk. ka-plunk. ka-plunk. ka-plunk. ka-plunk. ka-plunk.

think that i wrote that word over and over and over again, literally millions of times over every day on this blog for the next 3-4 weeks. not only would that be ridiculous, it would also be incredibly uneventful. welcome to my garage.
---
last year i bought a rock tumbler at a yard sale. i remember having a rock tumbler when i was a little boy, and so i thought that it might be fun element to do with jack and cade as they grow up. the box has been sitting on a shelf in the garage all year, driving jack crazy. he has very recently known that there is some kind of toy in that box, and has been asking me for it over and over. finally, a few weeks ago we busted it out, realized that we needed some grit, ordered it off the internet, and waited. the courageousness arrived a few days later, so we threw the rocks and the grit and some water into the barrel and plugged the machine in. and ka-plunk, we got bare rocks.

well, not exactly. the rocks we put in the thing look something like these rocks. in the end, they will hopefully be smooth and shiny. but it doesn't meet with quickly. not quickly enough for jack, and certainly not quickly enough for me. its been a week that our garage has been filled with the constant ka-plunk of rocks beating against each other in a hurried-forward of natural process. the booklet that comes with the tumbler reminds you that you are doing in a few weeks what it takes nature

“Squeak, squeak” and before you know it, unit calculations

My pacify left for work pretty early that morning, so I didn't get a chance to explain.
But the email came through in a little while after he arrived at his desk: "The heating/cooling people are coming out to check the furnace in a couple of weeks. It's making a awful noise. I don't know why, because it's not even running, but for a few bucks, it's better to have it checked out and tuned up before the weather turns."
And while I'm all for a pristine HVAC system, I had to snigger when I read his email. This was my reply: "Uh, well, that squeaky noise is the rock tumbler we set up in the basement. I heard it this morning too, only I thought it was a cricket."
Besides chuckling at the exigency call to fix the furnace, I giggled a bit at myself for the whole rock tumbler ordeal. When I was a kid, an only child, mind you, my dad constantly shoved science down my throat. Example: for my 8th birthday I got one of those electrode kits where you followed a want, complicated series of connections and something like "HELLO" would appear on the tiny screen. I got my own rock tumbler at an early age and created a ton of smoothed out gravel, which never unreservedly made it to gem quality. And then there was the time while studying for a test on cloud types in the fourth grade that he "helped me" by teaching me constituent calculations and drilled me on them so much that I forgot all about clouds and got a D on the test.
Too bad there weren't unit calculations on there for extra credit...
You be aware how when you're a kid and your parents annoy you and you swear that you'll never ever ever do those same things to your own kids? And then you grow up and have your own kids and you end up breaking your promise and you treat them the same dysfunctional way your parents treated you? Yep, I'm doing it to. On a habitually basis.
All of that force-fed gadgetry must have worked because I find myself shoving science into our lives all the time. We've always got some experiment
