Guns, knives... power tools?


I have a glaring power tool. It's new and I've just been committing herbicide with it all over the garden. It's one of those hedge trimmers that look like two double-edged ripsaws slotted together so that one slides up and down over the other. Anything caught between those pairs of speeding nerve teeth gets chopped. So, the garden has been tamed for now. I used that tool, a mower, a strimmer and a fair bit of weed torpedo. Violence and chemical warfare. It occurred to me that if plants developed intelligence, they'd think I was Saddam Hussein. Except shorter and without the moustache.

The subject is, that tool is deadly, It's battery powered and can be used with one hand. I've counted my fingers and they're all still there, but if the Elfin Safety gets a foothold of this, they're sure to want to ban it. Too late, I've got one and I'm keeping it.

In fact, I'm surprised the Banners haven't had a go at power tools in general. I have a penetrate, jigsaw, several screwdrivers and other things that are battery powered and therefore portable. A friend of mine has a drill I'm jealous of - a Ferm 24v SDS hammer repetition. Portable, quick-change bits and it'll breeze through concrete. What do I need one for? Hey, it's a gadget. I don't 'need' to have a miniature Linux laptop and I don't 'need' all those cameras. I like gadgets.

If I had a similar collection of huge knives, I'd be in unpleasantness. If I had even one gun, even if I had no bullets for it, I'd be in big trouble. So far, I can have an arsenal of tools that all make knives look like children's toys and most of which would publish a gun-wielder blanch. I wonder how long I'll be allowed to keep them? How long before that garden wins, once and for all, and I am fined by the council every week for not keeping it up - or prosecuted for trying?

Of course, I do have knives. Since I don't like processed foods (nothing to do with any health kick, I just don't like the drop and I've seen how 'reconstituted
